MIME THEATRE "A"
One-actor-theatre, promoting mime and expression of motion, creating original multifaceted projects: from dramatic tragedy-filled performances to ironic sketches of entertainment genre.
Mime theatre "A" stands out from other theatres because of its genre. ”If I want the motion – emotion to have a direction – meaning, I have to train my mind and body constantly” says Aleksas Mažonas, the actor and the author of performances. The performer of soul dances does not restrict him and his performances have something that cannot be learned at any acting school. That is devotion to motion and ability to sense the world and feel its depth, while looking at it philosophically and surrendering your body to inspiration.
The theatre was established in 1993 in Klaipeda Music Centre (at present – the Culture Centre "Žveju rūmai"). Its most prominent performances: "Nostalgia" ("Nostalgija"), "Reflection" ("Atspindys"), "Hooves" ("Kanopos"), "Angel" ("Angelas"), "Beating" ("Plakimas"), also numerous projects and experimental works with famous Lithuanian and foreign artists.
Aleks's works are multicolored. He distances himself from classical mime and in some of his performances he does not use it at all. He calls his style "Soul Dance" ("Sielos šokis").
The theatre travels heavily around Europe and takes part in numerous international theatre festivals in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, and Russia. It also participates in various festivals organized in Lithuania.
“There is a constant fierce fight between good and evil. It inspires people and encourages them to live. To me this fight is an invisible soul dance. Thus in order to express it, I base my mono-performances on the principle of contrast. My aim is to speak in a way that allows the spectator to see himself/herself, his/her soul fight, distinguish what is what and who is who. The story line of almost all performances is based on my own experience. It may be a literary work that made a certain impression on me. I have to translate it into my own language, because that work was not written especially for me”, says Aleksas Mažonas.
In 2008 Aleksas Mažonas was awarded "The Mask of Gratitude" ("Padėkos Kauke") for his achievements in theatre art.
Currently, the repertoire of the theatre includes:
"Nostalgia" ("Nostalgija") – a man's journey through labyrinths of life. Music is the image of time, whereas "The Beatles" song "The Long and Winding Road" was an impulse for this performance. "The long and winding road that leads to your door, Will never disappear, I’ve seen that road before It always leads me here, leads me to your door".
"Baptism" ("Krikštas") – what makes a man different from an animal? Where is the line having crossed which we become tools in the hands of God or Satan? When a man's soul is suffocating in the darkness of the body, when it is sufferring hunger and longing for something unknown, a sudden cry breaks out – it is God searching for his creation. Will the man return the call? Will he have the courage to start a long and dangerous journey towards Love and Truth?
"Cold Ground" ("Šalta žemė") – "Very often hope is born out of despair" (Curtius). The title of the performance suggests the contradiction to the sky, as there is not only the depth, out of which all life emerges, but the grave, as well, into which everything must go back. The play is dedicated to the memory of the childhood friend who died from alcohol overdose. In the story domestic images mix with the character's visions. I would say that "Cold Ground" is domestic poetry – the story about a man's loneliness and soul's flight, about memories and hope. His journey through life is waiting for something true and permanent, but various losses follow him, and he tries to fight them with the help of melodies of old songs.
"Music is the best consolation for a sad man" (Martin Luther).
"November Suite" ("Lapkričio siuita") - is a philosophic motion poem about a man's life that can be compared to a flower. The flower is a widespread symbol of youth. Similarly to the flower in the summer our heart revives and awakens. Just like the flower it blossoms, but then our body fades. The Bible says: “As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more” (Psalm 103, 15-16).
This drama and tension shows paradox beauty, despicability and sacrifice of the self-destructive man. "November Suite" main character's life reflexions are a mosaic of colored broken glass guiding a spectator through his world of associations.
"Graffiti" ("Graffiti") - Just like many of us get the chills and feel uneasy at the sight of walls and fences covered with graffiti, Aleks's first appearance on the stage in "Graffiti" makes you startle. A man wearing black plods into an empty space. His face shows loss, pain and anger. He is frightened and with his fingers he is feeling the invisible wall that has imprisoned him. There is no way out. Therefore the man takes imaginary paint and a brush and paints his feelings on the wall...
The next episode of the performance shows a creature suffering in a soul's prison. The main character cannot free him from tightly knit rope, escape from a box, while the audience clearly sees that two sides of the box have holes in them. Thus, there is a way out, but the main character of the performance cannot see it or maybe he is afraid to believe it...
Instead he chooses to dress like a jester and pretend that life is beautiful and fun. He puts on a fake smile and communicates with those who surround him (spectators). He greets them and shakes hands with them, although after that he cannot shake off himself their problems and suffers in his cage of loneliness again.
