Organization of the international theatre festival 'Mountain Ash' ('Šermukšnis').

Theatre in brief:

Klaipėda Castle theatre was established in 1985.
Founder - Alvydas Vizgirda, patron – Klaipėda town municipality.
Performances staged by the theatre cast theatre and cinema actors, Klaipėda University Art Faculty students and graduates. During its 23 years of work the troupe staged 48 premiere performances and visited 21 foreign countries. Theatre director and actors are organizers of the regular international theatre festival 'Mountain Ash' ('Šermukšnis'). Castle theatre is a prominent element of Klaipeda culture.

Performances of the theatre – appeal to human sensitivity, are extremely warm and intimate, sometimes grotesque and shocking, opening the imagination of a modern man.  Latest performances of the Castle theatre demonstrate the tendency to include more carnival features. A carnival is a spectacle without a ramp and distinction between performers and spectators. The carnival puts a colorful hetaera's cloth on philosophy.

Often in performances of the Castle theatre the main character consciously puts on the mask of a jester and surrenders to being laughed at and humiliated. At that moment the carnival pre-planned turn-over of the world takes place: the way that moral defenders behave towards the jester shows immorality lurking inside of them...

Currently the repertoire of the theatre includes:

Alessandro Baricco 'Silk' ('Šilkas');
Dario Fo and Franka Rame 'I'm Waiting for You Honey' ('Aš laukiu Tavęs, mielasis');
'The Town of Million Smiles' ('Milijono šypsenų miestas') – performance based on internet comments about the Sea Festival 2007;
Thea Dorn 'Marlene' ('Marlenė')
'Nightingale' ('Lakštingala') – musical fairy tale based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

Street performances, improvised performances:

'Sirens' ('Sirenos')
Impressive street event with a hint of the sea and Versailles's Gardens, created by designers Aina Zinčiukaitė and Vytas Aleknavičius. It is the street improvised performance receiving thunderous applause and gaining spectators' fascination.

'Porcelain Wedding' ('Porcelianinės vestuvės')
Eccentric procession with some wedding elements, mysterious characters. Improvised performance reminds of a reception of gathering of revived white sculptures in a full moon. Authors of this performance attribute it to the category of serious – not serious theatre attractions, performances.

'Safeguarding Deities' ('Sergstinčios dievybės') Masks of Sri Lankan safeguarding deities, bright and vibrant exotic costumes, rhythms of the South – an echo of distant countries on our streets. Mystic event radiating something unknown that attracts us. Choreographers – Irma and Rolandas Stoniai.

'Black Magic' ('Juodoji magija')
Merry and playful street theatre performance with original make-up, elaborate costumes designed by Ainos Zinčiukaitės, comic and fun actors' games with spectators.

International theatre festival 'Mountain Ash' ('Šermukšnis'):

International theatre and event festival 'Mountain Ash' ('Šermukšnis') – one of the most beautiful summer theatre festivals in Lithuania.

The festival is constantly expanding the geographical representation of participating countries and promoting non-specific theatre genres in non-specific spaces. During the festival various theatre forms, actions, improvisations and carnival processions are presented.

sometimes it is not even a theatre, but pure fantasies or happenings with theatre elements. International theatre festival 'Mountain Ash' ('Šermukšnis') is rich in music actions, attractions, circus shows. The true theatre genre - performances – comprises only a minor part of the programme. All these are truly interesting theatre presentations worth your attention.

However, the true 'Mountain Ash' ('Šermukšnis') - not separate performances or spectacular events, but an overall festival – town spaces pulsating with colors, events and phantasmagoria, and with their illogical, weird, fun and utterly theatrical life.
